Snowfall and temperatures around freezing point caused slippery roads in parts of Lower Saxony on Sunday. In the Hanover region, among other places, several cars slipped.

According to the Hanover Police Department, there were 21 weather-related accidents by noon. One person was slightly injured, otherwise it was just sheet metal damage. The police in the district of Gifhorn also reported some traffic accidents due to snow. But no one was hurt here. Among other things, the front of a truck slipped into a ditch on the B4 near Sprakensehl in the early morning. On Sunday morning, smoothness also caused traffic obstructions further south: a truck had crossed between Rehren and Rohdental (Hameln-Pyrmont district). The highway was temporarily closed.

Up to 18 centimeters of fresh snow in the Harz Mountains

It had snowed on Sunday night in particular south of the Mittelland Canal. Temperatures around freezing point caused wintry road conditions in many places. On the motorways in the Hanover region, drivers were only able to move at a significantly reduced speed. The situation relaxed in the late morning – the temperatures rose and the snowfall stopped. The German Weather Service (DWD) had forecast several centimeters of fresh snow from Osnabrück via the Weserbergland to the Wendland for the night and the morning. In the Harz Mountains there was even 18 centimeters of fresh snow over the weekend.
