Seven-year-old Jacob Hyatt gets his long-awaited Iron Man-style prosthetic hand.
The boy from England has been missing his left hand since he was born.
Early on, his mother Bernice tells her son that it’s good to be different.
Quote Wochit Minute 0:20-0:41: “I taught Jacob to be confident from a young age. He should walk into a room and say “look, here I am” and know that he is different but also unique. He should celebrate this and carry it out with pride so that everyone can see it.
There are many things that the boy cannot master on his own – that’s why a new bionic prosthesis should help.
“The superhero arm has definitely made some things easier. For example, Jacob can now hold two things at the same time, play with his Legos, ride his bike and do many small things like opening the door and holding his backpack at the same time. The prosthesis has made a lot possible for him, but he still has a lot to learn. He must learn to have two hands. It’s a process, but he’s doing really well and it’s helping him a lot.”
When Jacob tries on his superhero prosthesis for the first time, he doesn’t want to take it off.
“The first fitting was great. He was so excited. We walked into the room and there were superhero arms everywhere, even some employees wore prosthetic limbs. The man we met was awesome. Jacob was very confident. He sat at the table like a big boy and so I withdrew a little. He sort of held his own meeting.”
“I was very happy and at the same time very excited. I screamed with joy when I went to bed.”
But there is one problem: the prosthesis is very expensive and the family cannot afford it.
That’s why mother Bernice starts a fundraiser to be able to finance the prosthesis.
A total of over £14k has been raised for the Iron Man style prosthetic and Jacob is finally able to wear his superhero arm.
Jacob’s dream of being able to ride a bike safely like his friends has finally come true.
