When Vladimir Putin became head of the Russian secret service FSB in 1998, there was one man who broke the news to him and then introduced him to the public. That was Sergey Kiriyenko. Kiriyenko was the Russian Prime Minister at the time, so he sat at the table in front of the microphones and paid tribute to the newcomer, as Putin stood up sharply next to him, until Kiriyenko said “thank you” and Putin sat down again.
