According to initial forecasts, the SPD is ahead of the Christian Democrats in the Bremen Senate elections. While the Greens suffered losses, one party benefited particularly strongly.

According to forecasts, the SPD has become the strongest force in the elections in the state of Bremen. According to figures from ARD and ZDF on Sunday (6 p.m.), Mayor Andreas Bovenschulte’s Social Democrats, who have been in power for almost 80 years, are 29.5 to 30 percent ahead of the previously oppositional CDU with 24.5 to 25.5 percent.

The Greens, governing with the SPD, come to 12 to 12.5 percent in the two-city state of Bremen and Bremerhaven. The Left Party, as the third coalition partner, achieved 10.5 to 11 percent in the state parliament, which is called the citizenship there.

Final result not expected until Wednesday

According to the forecasts, the FDP is between 5 and 5.5 percent. The local right-wing populist movement Bürger in Wut (BIW) improved significantly to 10.5 percent. It benefits from the fact that the AfD was not allowed to vote because of internal competing lists of candidates.

Due to the complicated Bremen electoral system, the provisional official final result is not expected until Wednesday. Bremen and Bremerhaven are considered separate elective areas, each with its own five percent hurdle. A party that jumps the hurdle in an electoral area is represented in the citizenship.
