Self-promotion from Ludwigshafen: The ugliest city in Germany – Panorama

One might think that German cities are constantly looking for partners. They constantly present themselves as open and attractive. Of course not to impress other cities – most of them already have enough town twinning and too many long-distance relationships are exhausting – but to attract people, especially wealthy tourists or income-generating taxpayers.

What makes cities attractive is beauty, a well-groomed appearance, you have to get everything you need to meet your needs, and if they’re rich, it doesn’t hurt either. So basically like when looking for a human partner. Munich is considered chic, Hamburg is even considered a pearl and Berlin is sexy (and a little dirty, but some people like it). Kaiserslautern describes itself as a “beautiful piece of the Palatinate” and Konstanz as a “beating heart”.

But what if you’re just not beautiful? If you’ve never topped the city rankings Wirtschaftswoche shows up? Is never described as particularly child-friendly or worth living in? If you even get the title of “Germany’s ugliest city” – if only in a satirical show and that three years ago?

Ludwigshafen made the best of it. The city in Rhineland-Palatinate offers guided tours to “ugly places” under the name “Germany’s Ugliest City Tours”: to a disused train station, a former water basin and a place called and looks like Carl-Wurster-Platz. The demand is great, reports the German Press Agency. Of course it is. Who wants beauty when they can have a sense of humor and honesty.
