The Seine et Marne keep on gain inhabitants over the years. This Thursday, December 29, 2022, the National Institute for Statistics and Economic Studies (Insee) unveiled the latest census figures. As of January 1, 2020, 1,428,636 people live in Seine-et-Marnei.e. 7,439 inhabitants more thanin 2019.

This represents approximately 12% of the total population ofIle-de-France and makes Seine-et-Marne the second most populated department in the Greater Crown of Parisafter the Yvelines.

Low population movements

In addition to gaining inhabitants each year, the largest department of Île-de-France manages to keep the population on his land. According to INSEE, the increase in the population is also explained by ” an apparent migratory balance barely in deficit (-0.1%), by far the lowest in the region”.

But if the Seine-et-Marnais remain in the department, this does not prevent travel between municipalities. Thus, the institute notes a “particularly sustained demographic growth in the west of Seine-et-Marne, in particular around Marne-la-Vallée”. In parallel, ” the population is decreasing in some areas located on the fringes of the region”, i.e. in the extreme east of the territory.

Meaux, still in first place

So, with this data collected, which are the most populated cities in Seine-et-Marne? In its report, INSEE also reveals the number of inhabitants per municipality, which makes it possible to establish a new classification of the cities of the department. And Meaux remains the most populated city of Seine-et-Marne with 55,709 inhabitants on January 1, 2020.
