Schwabing: Hope for the Goldhannes in the Herzogstraße – Munich

Those who want to marry have a good chance of being able to forge their wedding rings themselves at Schwabing’s “Goldhannes” at Herzogstraße 86 in the future. The reason is a decision by the Bavarian State Office for the Preservation of Monuments. Sensitized by the tenants and Westschwabing’s local politicians, the authorities checked the property’s status as a monument. The result: not only the front building, but also the back building, in which the goldsmith Johannes Heinrich has had his workshop for 27 years, is worth protecting. This protection status, emphasizes the state office when asked by a tenant, implies not only the structural appearance “also historical uses such as, for example, use as a workshop and residential building in the present case”.

From the perspective of the district committee, a decision that helps prevent gentrification. Because so far, the houses have mainly been inhabited by young people, and the apartment layouts are ideal for flat shares. The owners, a community of heirs, would like to convert the apartments and expand the attics. In addition, the goldsmith’s workshop is to be converted into living space. The district committee rejected the project for the second time, now with reference to the improved monument status. However, the district committee is only heard – the final vote as to whether a building project is approved or not rests with the city’s local building commission.
