“Minute of silence, exchange or even educational sequence”: schools are invited by the Ministry of Education to pay tribute to Samuel Paty, Friday October 14 or Monday October 17. The history-geography teacher was murdered almost two years ago, on October 16, 2020, for showing caricatures of Muhammad in class.
His beheading in front of the college where he taught, in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine (Yvelines), had aroused considerable emotion. “According to the appreciation of the teachers, the tribute to Samuel Paty can be the occasion for a time of reflection, exchanges or productions with the students”, is it written on the Eduscol site, which provides content teaching to teachers.
Freedom of expression, values of the Republic and role of the School
This time of tribute “is an opportunity to raise awareness of what critical thinking is, the importance of the scientific approach, based on facts and their observation. The confrontation of facts, representations and ideas makes it possible to form an informed opinion on the most sensitive subjects”, assures Eduscol, inviting the teachers to rely on what was done last year.
“Documents (poems, speeches, literature, texts of reflection and iconographic documents) accompanied by avenues of analysis and proposals for activities related to freedom of expression, the values of the Republic and the role of the school can also serve as supports for this time of reflection, ”adds the site.
