Scholz in Argentina: South America is worth all the effort – opinion

Chancellor Olaf Scholz travels through Argentina, Chile and Brazil. Not least because these countries have so much that Germany would also like to have. The problem: not only Germany.

There’s no question: it’s not exactly the closest route from Berlin to Buenos Aires. The German and Argentinian capitals are 12,000 kilometers apart, and the flight takes about 14 hours, which is quite a strain. And yet Chancellor Olaf Scholz chose South America as the destination for his first non-European trip this year: first Argentina, then Chile and from there on to Brazil. Three countries in little more than half a week, a long-haul flight almost every day. One can certainly ask: Is the region really worth all this effort? The simple answer is: absolutely.
