Calixto Bieito stages the musical “Cabaret” at the Schauspiel Stuttgart: fast-paced, timeless, great.

The nastiest scene didn’t come in the 1966 stage version of ‘Cabaret’, only in the 1972 film adaptation starring Liza Minelli as Sally Bowles. In that scene (in the film), Sally’s friend Brian and Maximilian von Heune, who is sexually attached to both Sally and Brian in lustful decadence, visit a beer garden. In two years, Hitler will seize power, what can be expected from it is shown here: A blond boy, well built and in Hitler Youth uniform, gets up, begins to sing a pathetic, natural bombast song, all but one old man bet Beer garden visitors, the song becomes a beacon of longing patriotism and is at the same time a very common catchy tune: “The tomorrow is mine” – “Tomorrow belongs to me”.
