Sarkozy judged again, renewable energies in the Assembly and England-France in quarters

Did you miss the news this early morning? We’ve put together a recap to help you see things more clearly.

Nicolas Sarkozy will make his comeback on Monday in the legal arena. The former president is expected this afternoon at the Paris courthouse for his appeal trial for corruption and influence peddling in the “Paul Bismuth” case, alongside his lawyer Thierry Herzog and the former magistrate Gilbert Azibert. At first instance, following a trial in which he denounced “infamy”, Nicolas Sarkozy was sentenced on March 1, 2021 to three years’ imprisonment, including one year, thus becoming the first head of the State of the Fifth Republic sentenced to prison.

The National Assembly will talk about energy transition from this Monday. And on the issue of renewable energies, France is lagging behind. The country, which has long relied on the power of its nuclear fleet, in fact generated a quarter of its electricity in 2021 with renewables, a lower share than elsewhere in Europe. To reverse this trend, a bill is therefore before the deputies. For this text, already adopted after alterations at first reading by the Senate and in committee by the deputies, the government will do everything to convince the socialists and the environmentalists, given the strong reluctance of the LRs.

After its clear victory against Poland (3-1) in the round of 16 of the World Cup, the France team now has just under a week to prepare for its quarter-final. And the poster is now known: the Blues will face the English. The Three Lions have indeed curtly dismissed Senegal (3-0) with a first goal from Harry Kane on Sunday. The meeting next Saturday promises to be the first real big test for the French team in this 2022 World Cup.
