He has a year off, but Santa Claus is always on duty on the holidays. But where is the man in the red coat right now? Google reveals it in a tool, but there is another tracker.

It is early morning on Christmas Eve. Santa Claus makes the final preparations before we start from Santa Claus Village at the North Pole. Punctually at 11 a.m., the man in the red robe starts his rounds of the world with his reindeer to give presents to young and old. At least that’s how Google presents it in its “Santa Tracker”, where you can watch Santa Claus traveling around the world (Click here for Google’s Santa Tracker). In his red sleigh, Santa Claus rushes over the Google map, heading for his destination. The first is Prowidenija in the far east of Russia. To find out more about Santa’s next destination, Google has added a local guide to the destinations, where you can find out more and look at pictures if you are interested. There are also games and puzzles for the whole family.

Santa Claus tracker: The idea has been around for over 60 years

However, the idea of offering Santa’s trip for follow-up is not new. The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) has been offering its own Santa Tracker since Christmas 1955. In the days when there was no internet, NORAD kept giving the current location of Santa Claus on its own initiative. Since 1981 there has also been a hotline that children can call and the current location is transmitted.

The program is very popular: every year the volunteers receive over 100,000 calls and 12,000 e-mails, all of which are answered. According to one CNN report each helper answers around 40 calls every hour. In the meantime, NORAD also offers its own homepage, on which you can follow Santa’s path. (Click here for the NORAD tracker) Not only the route is given, but also, as with Google, the number of gifts that it is currently delivering. In contrast to the Google tracker, however, Santa Claus does not start at NORAD until later, namely at 8 p.m. German time – most of the gifts are already under the tree in this country.
