Samsung: 57″ gaming monitor & alternative to Apple Studio Display

Samsung today unveiled a whole load of new monitors at CES 2023. Two models in particular stand out: the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 with an extreme 57 inch diagonal and “8K” resolution as well as Samsung’s first “5K monitor” ViewFinity S9.

Samsung’s biggest hit yet in terms of gaming monitors is called the Odyssey Neo G9 G95NC and has a gigantic, curved Quantum Mini LED display with a diagonal of 57 inches. The panel has a resolution of 7680×2160 pixels and is therefore as wide as two 4K screens side by side. Samsung calls the whole thing dual UHD resolution, with the aspect ratio of course being 32:9.

According to the manufacturer, this is the first panel of this kind. In order to be able to cope with the enormous amounts of data for the very high resolution, the Samsung Odyssey Neo G9 Gaming Monitor has, for the first time ever, a DisplayPort 2.1 connection that enables a doubled transmission rate. Despite the high resolution and gigantic dimensions, the panel offers a maximum refresh rate of 240 Hertz.

The Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 G95SC monitor, which comes with a diagonal of 49 inches, is also a gigantic gaming display with a curved panel. The huge OLED panel uses Quantum Dot technology and has an aspect ratio of 32:9. Of course, Samsung advertises this model with the infinitely high contrast that the OLED display enables. The switching time is just 0.1 milliseconds, while the panel supports a maximum refresh rate of up to 240 Hertz.

Another new highlight in Samsung’s monitor portfolio is the Samsung ViewFinity S9 S90PC, which is the Korean electronics giant’s first 5K display. The device has a diagonal of 27 inches and has a very high resolution of 5120×2880 pixels. Basically, the S9 is Samsung’s answer to the 5K screens produced by Apple and LG designed for use on Macs.

Accordingly, Samsung also advertises a very high color accuracy and a wide color spectrum, which is supposed to ensure the most accurate color reproduction possible thanks to factory calibration. In addition, you have a built-in “Color Calibration Engine” available, with which white balance, gamma and RGB values can be perfectly adjusted with a smartphone app.

A matt screen surface should also help to avoid reflections and distractions. The Samsung ViewFinity S9 monitor also serves as a Thunderbolt 4-capable USB Type-C hub to enable data transfers at enormous speeds. A 4K camera is also attached to the device for high-definition video calls. Samsung has not yet announced prices or availability dates for any of its new display models.
