Nintendo Switch sales fell by almost 50 percent in the last quarter. This caused a drop in sales and profits for the Japanese company.
Because sales of the aging Switch console have dropped dramatically, Nintendo has suffered a drop in sales and profits. Only 2.1 million units of the flagship were sold in the first quarter, which corresponds to a decline of 46 percent compared to the previous year, the Japanese company announced.
Second most successful Console from Nintendo
Due to the ailing Switch, Nintendo’s sales fell by over 55 percent year-on-year to 246.6 billion Japanese yen (1.65 billion dollars). Profits also fell by 46.5 percent to 80.9 billion yen from April to June.
In the previous fiscal year, the Japanese game manufacturer was only able to sell half as many units of the popular handheld hybrid console, at around 15.7 million. Investors are now eagerly awaiting the successor to the aging but very successful Nintendo Switch. The company had already announced that it would present a new console in the current fiscal year, which ends in March 2025.
The Switch is now over seven years old and, in terms of sales, is the company’s second most successful console after the Nintendo DS. Since its release in 2017, it has sold more than 140 million units. It can even come close to the best-selling video game console of all time – Sony’s PlayStation 2 (155 million units sold). Nintendo is forecasting sales of 13.5 million Switch consoles for the period between March 2024 and March 2025.
