Russians call negotiations with the US ‘unsuccessful’: is war looming in Ukraine? – Politics abroad

The Ukraine conflict of 2022 is slowly reminiscent of the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962: Russia does NOT rule out stationing its military in Cuba and Venezuela!

︎ Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov said this on RTVi, threatening: “Everything depends on the actions of our American colleagues.” For the time being, there are no new talks with the United States about the Ukraine crisis. Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov spoke of a “serious confrontation on the world stage”.

Russia claims the US military presence in Europe threatens its security, but has itself deployed 100,000 troops to the border with Ukraine. Representatives of the 30 NATO countries held talks with Russia on Wednesday. The Kremlin said afterwards that this week’s negotiations had been “unsuccessful”.

Is war threatening?

The Mayor of Kiev, Vitali Klitschko, criticizes the German government’s position in the conflict between Ukraine and Russia. Germany hesitates “to supply us with defensive weapons for fear of being able to provoke Putin further. This position is difficult to understand.”

Negotiations between the US and Russia on Ukraine’s security without Ukraine’s direct participation are “like a slap in the face”. Klitschko reiterated to BILD: “We are very concerned about further Russian aggression against our country and have been discussing war and peace for months, but Ukraine is not at the table of international negotiations. How can that be?”

► The lack of modern defense weapons could even tempt Putin to more aggression against Ukraine. Because the following applies: “The Russian government, Russian President Vladimir Putin, exploits every weakness in the West.” And: “We cannot fight against heavily armed forces with pillows!”

The governing party SPD sees things differently. Secretary General Kevin Kühnert said one should “not talk about potential international conflicts” to harm Russia’s controversial Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline. And SPD parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich even demands in the “taz”: “In the future, we need a European peace order that includes Russia.”

Klitschko further said: “If the US and Europe allow Putin to attack Ukraine, he will not stop at Ukraine. Then Putin will turn his attention to the Baltic states. And when he speaks of his desire to give back the Soviet empire, that also includes the former GDR. Therefore, the threat of war against Ukraine should alarm every German. After all, Putin never hid that he saw the collapse of the USSR as a political tragedy for Russia.”

Now Ukraine is forced to defend its existence.
