A BBC documentary that sheds light on the relationship between Prince Harry and Prince William and the press causes trouble in the palace: The Queen, Prince Charles and Prince William made surprisingly sharp comments on the TV program.

In an extraordinary step, the British royal family has criticized a BBC documentary about the Royal Family and the relationship between the Queen’s grandchildren Prince William and Prince Harry. In a joint statement, representatives of Queen Elizabeth II, heir to the throne Prince Charles and Queen’s grandson Prince William accused the public broadcaster of presenting “excessive and unfounded allegations from unnamed sources as fact”. The joint statement by Buckingham Palace, Clarence House and Kensington Palace was shown at the end of the broadcast by the BBC itself.

The episode “The Princes And The Press”, broadcast on Monday night by BBC 2, suggests that brothers William and Harry were each alleged to have fed journalists with allegations against the other side. Both reject that. The relationship between the two Queen grandchildren is considered to be heavily strained since Harry and his wife Duchess Meghan publicly accused the palace of racism and lack of support.

On the show, a private investigator also apologized to Harry for tapping the phone of one of the prince’s ex-girlfriends. He stole Harry’s teenage years, Gavin Burrows said. At the beginning of the 2000s, a “ruthless” culture without any morality prevailed in the media. With Harry, who seemed more fun-loving than his older brother William, more editions were made, said Burrows. That led to drastic research methods. Harry’s girlfriend at the time, Chelsy Davy, was also targeted. The prince has sued the publisher News Group Newspapers, which among other things published the “Sun” and earlier the scandalous newspaper “News of the World”.

Lady Diana - Ten Moments in which Princess Diana broke traditions

The second episode of the documentary runs a week later, on November 29th. It will probably cause even more trouble in the royal family, because it should specifically be about the years 2018 to 2021 – the time when Harry and William finally broke up. Even before the broadcast on Monday, the palace threatened to boycott the public broadcaster BBC because they did not get a preview of the films. The BBC – together with ITV and Sky – is part of the pool of stations that alternately broadcast the Queen’s Christmas address every year. But the relationship between the broadcaster and the royals has long been considered tense. It was not until May that the palace apologized after it had been finally proven that the scandalous interview with Princess Diana in 1995 only came about because a BBC journalist presented her with lies and false evidence.
