With a strong race division, the German rowing eight qualified directly for the final at his first Olympic appearance in Tokyo on Saturday (July 24th, 21st). Three other German boats had previously reached the semi-finals.

There was no stopping the last 500 meters of the 2,000 meter route. Thanks to a furious final sprint, the Germany eighth has secured first place in the semifinals ahead of the USA and does not have to go through the repechage.

Just a few strokes after the start it was clear that the German boat and record Olympic champion USA would fight for the only direct place in the final. Vice European champions Romania and Australia quickly fell behind. In the first three intermediate times, the Americans were slightly ahead, the German eighth with batsman Hannes Ocik approached and ultimately the first boat to cross the finish line. The final run on the “Sea Forest Waterway” is scheduled for Friday.

Krüger / Weber in the double scull semifinals

The men’s double scull with Stephan Krüger and Marc Weber also put in a sovereign race in its hope run and made it into the semifinals on Sunday with a victory in front of the boats from Lithuania and Ireland.

Originally, the hope runs were scheduled for Monday and the eighth semifinals for Sunday. However, due to a storm warning for Tokyo due to an approaching typhoon, the rowing competitions were brought forward.

Thiele / Menzel also continued

In the women’s double scull, the German duo Annekathrin Thiele and Leonie Menzel placed second behind the Russian boat in the hope race to qualify for the semifinals. Over the 2,000-meter distance, the German boat was well in the race from the start.

In the end, Thiele / Menzel crossed the finish line a little more than a second behind the Russians Ekaterina Pitirimowa and Ekaterina Kurotschkina and just under two seconds ahead of the Czechs Kristyna Fleissnerova and Lenka Antosova, who also qualified for the next round.

The 22-year-old Menzel had broken in dramatically in the run-up to the heat on Friday and was taken away in a wheelchair with circulatory problems after the drive to the last place.

Easy double sculls Rommelmann / Osborne directly in the semifinals

Without a reunion, the light double scull (up to a maximum of 140 kilograms rower weight) is in the semifinals. Jonathan Rommelmann and Jason Osborne, together with their co-favorites Stefano Oppo and Pietro Ruta, clearly moved ahead of the field right from the start.

At the finish, Rommelmann / Osborne were a boat length ahead of the Italian, who had also qualified for the next lap.
