A run-off election must decide who will be the new mayor of Rostock. After the first round of voting, Eva-Maria Kröger (left) and Michael Ebert (supported by the CDU/FDP/UFR) were neck and neck at the top with the most votes.

The election of a new mayor will not be decided in Rostock until November 27th. In the first ballot, Eva-Maria Kröger (Die Linke) and Michael Ebert (independent, supported by the CDU, FDP, UFR) received the most votes, but neither achieved an absolute majority. They will face each other in a runoff election in two weeks. The member of parliament Kröger was just ahead and, according to the city administration, after counting all constituencies, had a vote share of 25.3 percent, Ebert came to 23.6 percent. Ebert is director of the state riot police and used to be the police chief in Rostock.

Five women and twelve men stood for election

Carmen-Alina Botezatu (SPD) received 16.5 percent of the votes, Claudia Müller (Bündnis90/Die Grünen) 8.6 percent, Michael Meister (AfD) 6.5 percent and Jörg Kibellus (individual applicant) 5.1 Percent. All other candidates achieved less than five percent of the votes. Five women and twelve men had applied for the post.

Kröger and Ebert satisfied with their results

Eva-Maria Kröger said she was very happy with the result. “We’ve also worked hard for it. And now it’s time for the runoff with the clear goal: Rostock will remain Rostock. That’s my wish,” said the left-wing politician to NDR 1 Radio MV. If she wins the election on November 27, she wants to first come to an understanding with the citizenry, because she knows that they want a more intensive relationship with the mayor “in order to finally implement important decisions.” Michael Ebert acknowledged “the trust that the people of Rostock have shown in me with this election result”. It is an incentive “to really invest more energy in the next 14 days”. If he is elected mayor, it is an important task for him to “set up the administration in such a way that it can take on and move the concerns of the people, but also of the economy and the city society in a sustainable manner”.

The SPD regretted that Carmen-Alina Botezatu “despite an extremely committed election campaign” missed the run-off election. “We take our hat off to the personal commitment of Carmen and her family in the election campaign,” it said in a Facebook text.

Previous Mayor Madsen left prematurely

The mayor is elected for seven years. This time, however, the residents were called to the polls early. The early elections became necessary because Mayor Claus Ruhe Madsen (independent) moved to Schleswig-Holstein in June after only three years in office and became Economics Minister there.

Around 172,000 Rostock residents aged 16 and over were able to cast their votes. Voter turnout was 43.7 percent. According to the election management, more than 99 percent of the votes cast were valid.
