A superstar alone doesn’t win any trophies. Christiano Ronaldo’s Saudi club al-Nassr have also missed their second chance at a title: the league. After all, he still has a place in the Asian Champions League.

Cristiano Ronaldo, soccer superstar, missed out on winning the championship in Saudi Arabia with his club al-Nassr. The team around the 38-year-old Portuguese couldn’t get past 1-1 against al-Ettifaq. Al-Ittihad used this blunder in the Saudi Pro League to win their ninth national title. The new champions beat relegation contenders al-Fayha FC 3-0. Al-Nassr had previously missed out on winning the cup with Ronaldo and remains without a title.

Has Ronaldo failed?

The “Saudi Gazette” described second place for the superstar’s team as “a heavy blow for the Riyadh-based club”, other Arab media even spoke of Ronaldo’s “failure”. The offensive star himself and his club have not yet commented on their result in the league.

Almost six months ago, Ronaldo signed a two-and-a-half-year contract with the Saudi club. According to media reports, including advertising revenue, he should get the equivalent of around 200 million euros per season.

Al-Nasser, after all, in the Champions League

After the 29th matchday, Saudi Arabia’s Champions League participants in Asia have also been determined. Champion al-Ittihad, runner-up al-Nassr and third-placed al-Hilal are in the premier class next season.
