RKI President Wieler bursts the collar – opinion

Put an end to the naive glossing over of the pandemic. Stop with absurd hearsay doubts about the vaccination and similar nonsense, which unfortunately some actors, footballers and cabaret artists also spread. See how worrying the situation is in clinics and in the healthcare sector as a whole. The seriousness of the corona situation can be measured by the incidence, the occupied intensive care beds and the vaccination rate, which has stagnated for weeks – or by Lothar Wieler and the vehemence with which he spoke on Wednesday of 400 unavoidable future deaths every day and warned that a “bad Christmas” is imminent.

If Wieler had a different temperament, he would have screamed

In a discussion with Saxony’s Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer, the President of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), who otherwise stoically announces his balance sheets, emphasized the current emergency, which will only get worse. He repeated several times that no one could prevent 400 people from dying from the virus, with currently 50,000 new infections every day, every day – “there is nothing more that can be done about that”. Those who do not get vaccinated should not be allowed to evade by testing themselves, because “we cannot get the virus out of the country with tests”. Had Wieler been blessed with a different temperament, he would probably have wept or screamed. It’s no use, but it would have made the desperate situation even clearer.

It is bold how Bavaria’s Prime Minister Söder criticizes science

It is indeed desperate. Since July, the RKI has warned that autumn and winter 2021 will be worse than 2020 if the vaccination rate remains so low and contacts are not reduced. The scenarios have been public for months, as studies have shown for months that although the effect is waning, vaccinations still offer the best protection against infections and severe suffering, such as both the intensive-care statistics and incidences of less than 100 in those who have been vaccinated and over 1000 in those who have not been vaccinated occupy. When politicians like Bavaria’s Prime Minister Markus Söder boldly claim that scientists did not see the threatening situation coming, it is outrageous. If 15 million adults with flimsy arguments still refuse to be vaccinated, it is irresponsible, selfish and deserving of no consideration. Both are simple: to howl.
