A Bonelli eagle regained its freedom on Thursday morning in the Hérault. The bird had been collected injured at the Center for the Protection of Wildlife, piloted by the League for the Protection of Birds (LPO), in Villeveyrac, near Sète. Victim of poaching, the eagle had received seven pellets in the body. The diagnosis was “serious”, according to the association.
Finally, after three and a half months of care and flight rehabilitation sessions in this specialized clinic, this female, again in great shape, was released into the wild. To follow his journey, a beacon was placed on his body.
“Eager to regain his freedom”
She left “very, very quickly”, once the crate where she was transported was opened, explains the association for the protection of birds, in the video of her flight, broadcast live Thursday morning on her Facebook page. “Sometimes they land for several minutes before leaving, but there she was visibly in a hurry to regain her freedom. »
This protected species, regularly victim of shootings, is threatened. According to the League for the Protection of Birds, there are only 44 pairs of Bonelli’s eagles in France today.
