Return of the government, six months of war and National Day in Ukraine and Air France pinned

Did you miss the news this early morning? We’ve put together a recap to help you see things more clearly.

It’s the end of vacation for the executive. The Council of Ministers is meeting this Wednesday at the Elysee Palace, in a climate filled with uncertainty linked to the war in Ukraine, climate change and inflation, pending parliamentary hostilities which will not resume until October. After three weeks at Fort de Brégançon, Emmanuel Macron therefore meets his government, the day after a working dinner, Tuesday evening, with Prime Minister Élisabeth Borne to address the main priorities for the start of the school year.

kyiv is on alert. Chance of the calendar, the National Day of Ukraine comes this Wednesday six months after the launch of the Russian invasion. “We must be aware that tomorrow (Wednesday) disgusting Russian provocations and brutal strikes are possible,” Volodymyr Zelensky warned on Tuesday evening. The date is particularly symbolic as the country celebrates its independence from the USSR in 1991. But in the macabre context of the conflict, “to celebrate” is not really the right verb, especially since many inhabitants will be confined : the authorities of kyiv have banned all public gatherings from Monday to Thursday in the capital, and the governor of the Kharkiv region has for his part ordered a curfew from Tuesday evening to Thursday morning.

Air France is in the sights of the BEA. The French authority responsible for investigating plane accidents published a harsh report on Tuesday in which it underlined the recurrence of incidents in which safety rules were ignored by airline crews. This report from the Bureau of Investigation and Analysis is concerned about “a certain culture established among some Air France crews which favors a propensity to underestimate the contribution of a strict application of procedures for safety” and calls on the company to “put compliance with procedures back at the center of the company’s safety culture”.
