Response to the crisis: Hoffenheim separates from coach Breitenreiter

The month-long descent at TSG Hoffenheim has officially cost coach André Breitenreiter his job at the Bundesliga club. On Monday, the club confirmed the separation, which several media had already reported on Sunday. Those responsible have not yet named a successor. The former Stuttgart coach Pellegrino Matarazzo is under discussion.

The 49-year-old rider, who only came at the start of the season, had to leave as a result of his protégés’ disastrous performance on Saturday at VfL Bochum (2:5). Breitenreiter, who had taken up his post in the Kraichgau with the advance praise of the Swiss champion coach (FC Zurich), seemed increasingly helpless in the face of the ongoing crisis. TSG has not won any of their last ten competitive games. In the round of 16 of the DFB Cup, defending champions RB Leipzig were the last stop (1: 3), in the league Hoffenheim have only scored two points in the last nine games. The gap to the relegation rank is only three points.

The development does not correspond to the ideas of majority owner Dietmar Hopp, who would like to see his club continuously in international business. After Alfred Schreuder and Sebastian Hoeneß, Breitenreiter is the third TSG coach in a row to have to leave early. All of Julian Nagelsmann’s successors did not make it to the original end of the contract.
