In the early morning hours of September 18, 1942, a man was executed in Berlin-Plötzensee prison, whom the notorious People’s Court had sentenced to death for “preparing to commit high treason”. Benno Neuburger, a 72-year-old Jewish man from Munich, protested against Hitler and the genocide of European Jews on anonymous postcards between autumn 1941 and spring 1942. The remarkable thing is that Neuburger named the dimension of the extermination campaign with unusual clarity at an early stage. Nevertheless, this Jewish resistance fighter is still largely unknown even to historians, let alone in the public consciousness.
