In the end, it was no surprise what was sent around the country as a breaking news story on Wednesday morning: Malu Dreyer is resigning as Prime Minister of Rhineland-Palatinate. After the last state election, there had already been speculation as to whether and when she would hand over the office, as Kurt Beck did in 2013. The names of a possible successor had been mentioned again and again, but she, Dreyer, had never commented on it.
