Status: 15.11.2022 12:22 p.m

When Continental was attacked by hackers at the end of August, it was still said that the cyber attack had been successfully repelled. But now stolen data from the automotive supplier is being offered for sale on the dark web – for $50 million.

The DAX company Continental continues to investigate the data theft after a cyber attack, but does not want to comment on media reports about new details. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing and is being given top priority, the automotive supplier confirmed.

The company said last week that the investigations with the help of external experts had discovered that the attackers had been able to steal part of the data. According to a report by “Handelsblatt” and “heise online”, the hackers have now published a list of file titles on the dark web while trying to sell the stolen data for $50 million.

Sensitive data – also from customers

The foretaste of the data volume of a total of 40 terabytes captured by a ransomware group called “Lockbit 3.0” is a file of almost eight gigabytes, the “Handelsblatt” reported further. It lists confidential information on strategy and investment plans, communications from the supervisory board, and personal data from Continental itself. Technical content about the car supplier’s customers, such as Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz and BMW, is also offered for sale.

At the end of August, Continental provided information about the cyber attack itself. At that time, it was said that the attack had been repelled, that business activities were not affected and that no third-party systems were affected.
