  • Ukrainian President visited Kherson on Thursday devastated by floods as authorities said some 600 square kilometers of the region were under water, two days after the destruction of the Kakhovka dam.
  • “We will help and rebuild everything that needs to be rebuilt,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyas he visited a river crossing and a hospital in the regional capital, with authorities only beginning to assess the humanitarian, economic and ecological damage.
  • Nearly a third of the flooded area, where thousands of people are being evacuated, is held by Ukrainian forces, while the rest is in Russian-occupied territory, regional governor Oleksandr Prokudin said on Telegram. The ecological fallout includes the flooding of 55,000 hectares of forest, where much of the wildlife is “doomed to die” said Ukrainian cabinet member Oleh Nemchinov.
  • According to the Ukrainian state emergency services, 1,995 people were evacuated, including 103 children. Many other people fled on their own. Emergency services explained that on the Ukrainian side of the river, “20 localities and 2,629 houses” had been flooded.
