Renovation of the Marienbrücke near Neuschwanstein begins – Bavaria

The renovation of the Marienbrücke near Neuschwanstein Castle, which has been closed for more than a year, is scheduled to begin on Monday. At the bridge in Schwangau (Ostallgäu district), which is popular with tourists as a viewpoint, several rock anchors would have to be replaced due to static problems and others would have to be driven into the rock again, the Ministry of Finance announced on Wednesday. The aim is to be able to open the bridge again in the summer. Finance Minister Albert Füracker (CSU) spoke of demanding work on the approximately 90 meter high bridge. Because of the alpine location, the material is “sometimes even delivered by helicopter”. The static problems on the bridge were discovered in February 2021, and the Marienbrücke has been closed since then.

The Marienbrücke was built by Bavaria’s King Maximilian II in the 1850s as a wooden bridge for his wife Marie. His son King Ludwig II replaced this with an iron construction. In 1978 the bridge had to be rebuilt.
