The US technology group Apple has started to have its new iPhone 14 manufactured in India. The company wants to reduce its dependence on China for its most important product.

For the first time, the US company Apple is having its latest iPhone manufactured in India. “We are pleased to manufacture the iPhone 14 in India,” the company announced. As the news portal Techcrunch reports, the devices are being built in the Foxconn factory near the Indian city of Chennai.

So far, Apple had only had smartphones from older iPhone generations produced in India. Analysts at JP Morgan now expect the company to have located around five percent of iPhone 14 production in the country by the end of 2022. In 2025 there will be enough capacity in Indian factories to build a quarter of all iPhones there.

Apple makes around half of its sales from the iPhone

India is the second largest smartphone market in the world after China. However, there is always criticism of the working conditions at Foxconn in India. Observers also see the relocation of production from China to India against the background of the China-Taiwan conflict and the dispute between Beijing and Washington in trade policy.

The iPhone is by far Apple’s top-selling product. In the most recent fiscal quarter ended June 25, the California-based group generated sales of $40.7 billion with the smartphone series. That was 49 percent of total sales of $83 billion. In the traditionally particularly strong quarter before Christmas, the proportion was even around 57 percent.
