According to the Association of German Transport Companies (VDV), the number of passengers in local public transport will not reach the level before the corona pandemic before next year at the earliest. This will not be possible in 2022, said the Hessian VDV chairman Thomas Wissgott. Without state rescue packages, the crisis would threaten the existence of companies. At the same time, it is important to continue investing now. New routes or vehicles would have years of lead time.
The utilization of local public transport (ÖPNV) was recently around two thirds. Many passengers no longer get on for fear of a corona infection. In addition, many people work in the home office, so that there are no longer any trips. According to the VDV, this could also have a lasting impact on passenger numbers. In order to attract people to public transport who have previously driven by car, a good and flexible offer is also important in rural areas.
