Refugees in Munich: Emergency accommodation planned in the gym – Munich

Because more refugees are arriving again, the city has to create thousands of new places to sleep – including in a tent city on the exhibition grounds. The situation could become particularly tight during the Christmas holidays.

Because there are not enough beds in Munich accommodation, refugees will probably have to sleep in a gym again during the Christmas holidays. Social officer Dorothee Schiwy opened this up to members of the city council on Tuesday afternoon in a video conference. It is “very likely” that a gym on Marsplatz (Maxvorstadt) will have to be opened during this time and another on Görzer Straße (Ramersdorf) will at least have to be made operational. Because the number of refugees arriving has increased in recent weeks, and this trend will probably continue over the winter, according to Schiwy.

Since mid-November, the city has had to provide around 130 additional beds per week, 50 of which are for newly arrived people from Ukraine, 30 for Ukrainians who are coming from private accommodation, and 50 for asylum seekers, mainly from Afghanistan and Syria seek protection in Germany. According to a specification by the government of Upper Bavaria, Munich has to provide 5,625 bed places.

The administration has continued to work out its emergency scenarios in the past few weeks. A draft resolution to release funds will come to the city council’s plenary session on Wednesday. According to this, the city expects to spend 127 million euros for the accommodation and care of refugees in 2023, of which 108 million euros are to be reimbursed by the government.

Among other things, the city wants to buy a school container system to replace a lightweight hall at Arnold-Sommerfeld-Strasse 15 in Neuperlach. In addition, a tent city with up to 2000 beds is to be built on the exhibition grounds, which would be ready for use from the beginning of January. As a further emergency option, the administration has identified 13 school gymnasiums that could be used as accommodation with a little advance notice.
