Migrants from Africa repeatedly set sail to reach the EU in usually overcrowded boats. The journey is very dangerous. It often ends fatally.
The rescued people, two 15-year-olds and a 21-year-old, reported during an initial interview by the police in the hospital that the boat had set sail from the Algerian coast around three weeks ago with 14 passengers. Eleven fellow travelers fell into the water and drowned when the boat capsized between Menorca and Sardinia. According to the authorities, the search for the eleven bodies that was initiated immediately has so far been unsuccessful.
Discovered by sailors
According to official information, the rescue operation took place around a hundred nautical miles (approx. 185 kilometers) east of Mallorca. The migrant boat in distress was discovered by French sailors who provided first aid and alerted their country’s authorities, the media reported, citing the authorities. The French informed the Spanish maritime rescue service and asked for help. It was said that he sent a helicopter to rescue the survivors.
Two of the rescued young men were slightly injured, but the health of the third migrant was critical due to severe dehydration, said the Spanish public emergency service Samu061.
