Recycled paper: not always environmentally friendly – Knowledge

In Samuel Schabel’s laboratory at the Technical University of Darmstadt, an apparatus that looks like a food processor often rattles. In the bowl of the silver-colored device, however, a stirring rod does not whisk together flour, eggs and milk, but water and scraps of paper, cardboard or cardboard. “Paper is a great material and the basic substance cellulose is an important renewable resource,” enthuses Schabel. Unlike most plastics, it is biodegradable and easy to recycle. “You just throw it in the water, then the fibers separate and can be reused umpteen times.”
