Record abandonment of animals this summer, especially cats and kittens, deplores the SPA

16,894 animals were collected by the SPA between May 1 and August 31, 2021. “A number historically at its highest level for a summer period, an increase of 7% compared to the last record of 2019”, notes the association. In a statement, the SPA assures that pets are “victims of the unregulated business of the object animal”. Among these animals: dogs, rodents, reptiles (new pets or NAC), but especially cats.

This summer SPA collected 11,669, 19% more than in the same period in 2019, an already record year. And among the clerks, it is the kittens who pay the heaviest price: the SPA by having collected and saved 30% more than in 2019. According to animal rights activists, cats are also victims of a cruel lack of sterilization and identification of this species.

A “worrying” increase in NACs

If the summer of 2020 marked by the Covid had caused a significant drop in direct abandonment of dogs in the 62 shelters and SPA houses, this summer marks an unfortunate return to the level of previous years with a total of 4,360 dogs collected including more than 2,000 abandoned directly to the SPA.

As for NACs (new pets), 850 have found refuge at the SPA, “a very worrying increase” of 82% compared to 2019. The end of September will mark the first reading in the Senate of the bill. on animal abuse.
