Real estate – construction does less – economy

The German construction industry did less in the first half of the year. Income in the construction industry shrank by 2.2 percent compared to the same period last year, as the Federal Statistical Office announced on Friday. Nevertheless, the number of employees increased by 1.8 percent. Most recently, the trend in sales was up again: in June alone it grew by 3.2 percent. Among the branches of the economy with the highest turnover, carpenters reported the strongest increases with 20.7 percent and roofers with 10.4 percent. Building construction achieved an increase of 3.4 percent. The industry has recently been plagued by material shortages and rising prices for construction timber, for example. In August, according to a survey by the Ifo Institute, 37 percent of construction companies complained about it.
