Numerous governments have condemned the attacks in Brazil and backed President Lula. The support is “unshakeable”, it said from the United States. France and Mexico also showed solidarity.
US President Joe Biden has sharply condemned the storming of the Brazilian government district by supporters of former head of state Jair Bolsonaro. The riots are “outrageous,” Biden told reporters on Sunday evening during a visit to the US southern border. His national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, wrote on Twitter that the United States condemned any attempts to undermine democracy in Brazil. US support for the country’s democratic institutions is unbroken.
Two years ago, the United States experienced something similar: on January 6, 2021, supporters of then President Donald Trump violently stormed the seat of parliament in Washington. Five people died in the attack at the time.
Support from Paris to Mexico City
French President Emmanuel Macron declared that the will of the Brazilian people and the democratic institutions must be respected and offered President Lula da Silva the support of France. Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called on Twitter for “an immediate return to democratic normality” in Brazil. Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni also tweeted Italy’s “solidarity with Brazilian institutions” and emphasized: “What is happening in Brazil cannot leave us indifferent.”
Mexico’s President Andrés Manuel López Obrador also condemned the “conservative coup attempt,” he wrote on Twitter. Brazil’s President Lula is not alone, he has the support of the progressive forces in his country, in Mexico, in the Americas and in the world.
Representatives of the European Union also spoke. He condemned the attack on “Brazil’s democratic institutions in the strongest possible terms,” wrote EU Council President Charles Michel on Twitter on Sunday. He pledged his “full support” to the incumbent head of state, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said he was “appalled” at the storming of the three buildings in Brasília by “violent extremists”. The EU reiterated its full support to President Lula and expressed its solidarity with the democratic institutions that had been targeted in this attack. “Brazilian democracy will triumph over violence and extremism,” it said.
