Rapper MHD tried at the assizes for murder in September

Rapper MHD, suspected of being involved in the murder of a young man during a brawl in the summer of 2018, will be tried before the Paris Assize Court from September 4 to 22, we learned this Friday from a source familiar with the matter. The 28-year-old artist, Mohamed Sylla, whose real name is, will appear for voluntary homicide, alongside eight other defendants.

The charges against him date back to the night of July 5 to 6, 2018. Loïc K., 23, was run over by a car, beaten up and then stabbed in the 10th arrondissement of Paris. A dozen people attacked him, a scene filmed on a mobile phone by a witness from a window, a key element of the file. Loïc K. died very quickly of his injuries.

Several witnesses on the spot

The investigation quickly focused on the trail of a settling of accounts between rival groups in north-eastern Paris from two districts: Chaufourniers and Cité rouge on one side, Grange aux Belles on the other. The rapper’s car from the 19th arrondissement, a recognizable black Mercedes, is the one that knocked down the young man, but several actors in the case ensure that he lent it very regularly.

Several witnesses also indicated that they had formally identified MHD on the spot, in particular by his haircut or a tracksuit from the Puma brand of which he was the ambassador. The rapper has constantly denied the facts. “It is a file which is based on very weak charges which could be swept away during the trial”, had estimated one of the lawyers of the artist, Me Antoine Vey, during the announcement of his return to the assizes.

This case has, in any case, put a sharp halt to the career of MHD, the self-proclaimed inventor of “Afro-trap”, a mixture of rap and African music. He had notably made himself known by a tube to the glory of PSG and had aroused the interest of Madonna or Drake.
