Rap, sex and Johnny Depp set fire to this year

The king won and it is deserved! Down With the King, by Diego Ontaro, won the Grand Prix at the Deauville Festival, which ends tomorrow. The jury chaired by Charlotte Gainsbourg distinguished this excellent film, in which a rapper lacking inspiration is introduced to life in the countryside. Rap star Freddie Gibbs reveals wonderful acting talent in this film which will hopefully soon find a French distributor thanks to this award.

Pleasure , by Ninja Thyberg, in theaters October 20, and Red rocket, by Sean Baker, which will be released on February 2, 2022, also caught the attention of the jury in a high quality selection. What these two fascinating films have in common: they evoke the porn industry, the first by following the itinerary of an actress who dreams of herself as a porn star, and the second by sharing the ordeals of a tempting exhausted actor to convince his very young girlfriend to get into this business. The film also received the Critics’ award. Blue bayou, by Justin Chon (in theaters this Wednesday), was honored by the public and John and the Hole, by Pascual Sisto, was awarded the Roederer Revelation Award. This very dark tale about a kid who settles accounts with his entourage is one of our favorites.

Movies but also stars

The coming of Johnny Depp was arguably the most followed event of a festival of which he was the superstar, attracting an impressive number of fans and onlookers. The actor did not disappoint them during a beautiful meeting where he returned to his career. He has declared his love for his fans, whom he prefers to call his “employers”. Comedian Michael Shannon and director Oliver Stone also won over festival-goers with their relevance and kindness when meeting with the public.

On the French side, films and stars had the pride of a festival mourning the death of Jean-Paul Belmondo to which Claude Lelouch, who had directed him in Itinerary of a spoiled child, paid a tribute that overwhelmed the spectators. The Comédie-Française was in the spotlight with the presence of Denis Podalydès in the jury, but also that of Laurent Lafitte and some of his comrades on stage for Guermantes by Christophe Honoré at the cinema on September 29.

We will also remember the presentation of Jane by Charlotte (released October 27), portrait of Jane Birkin by her daughter Charlotte Gainsbourg. The absence of Jane, weakened by a slight stroke, made the screening even more touching.

After a somewhat strange year 2020, the Deauville Festival has managed to reinvent itself by mixing great moments of American cinema, such Dune by Denis Villeneuve, presented in preview, to excellent French novelties such as A woman of the world, by Cécile Ducrocq. Laure Calamy plays a prostitute who tries to pay for her son’s education. In France as in the United States, sex makes the world go round, actresses and actors. On the boards as elsewhere.
