Poland: Cabinet discusses declaring state of emergency

Flooding has devastated several places in southwest Poland. The government is therefore holding an emergency meeting in Warsaw.
In view of the severe devastation caused by floods in In southwest Poland, Prime Minister Donald Tusk has called his cabinet to an emergency meeting on Monday morning. Tusk said he had prepared a decree declaring a state of emergency. The decision must, however, be approved by the cabinet.
Persistent rainfall has led to flooding in southwest Poland on the border with the Czech Republic. In the small town of Klodzko in Lower Silesia, entire streets were under water, and one person was killed. The village of Glucholazy in the Opole region was devastated by floodwaters.
The small town of Nysa in the Opole region was particularly affected on Monday night. Water from the Kłodzko Neisse, a tributary of the Oder, entered the emergency room of the local district hospital, the PAP news agency reported. A total of 33 patients were brought to safety from there in rubber dinghies, including children and pregnant women.
