This view of the future was bad. Actually too bad to be true. Almost three years ago, a Deutsche Bahn inspector warned of a disaster in the state-owned company’s rail network. Anatol Jung, a quality and safety inspector at Bahn-Netzgesellschaft, asked numerous employees confidentially about deficiencies in the control and safety technology for train traffic. The answers were mostly devastating. One employee even said that as the person responsible for the systems you are “not with one leg in jail, but with one and a half legs!”
