More than ever, current radio plays are based on texts that have already been tried and tested – on stage or in the book market – and are simply adapted for radio or as a podcast. When plays are written specifically for listening, classic dialogue narratives currently predominate. Working more formally and experimentally, while also understanding the radio play more aesthetically as an art form, is not high on the agenda of editors in their (understandable) efforts to attract a new, younger audience to audio libraries.
