The racism scandal involving Real Madrid footballer Vinícius Jr. at the weekend has led to enormous diplomatic dissonance between Brazil and Spain. Brazil’s Justice Minister Flávio Dino said his country was considering “extra-territorial” measures to prosecute the repeated attacks against the Brazil international in Spain. “It would be extreme, no question, but it could work and it could be necessary,” said Dino. The day before, President Luíz Inácio Lula da Silva had declared on the sidelines of the G-7 summit in Hiroshima, Japan, that precautions had to be taken “to prevent racism and fascism from conquering the football stadiums”.
