Racing: Why are the rules of Formula 1 so complicated? – Sports

Why does Formula 1 make its rules so terribly complicated? The rule that made Max Verstappen world champion in Suzuka makes no sense at all when you look at it in the light of day.

Good news to start with, so that it doesn’t get lost: the world automobile association Fia has done something really good about the chaos it caused at the Suzuka Grand Prix! Exceptionally, his race stewards only needed a few minutes to give a driver a time penalty for a driving error. Charles Leclerc was not first summoned to the hearing to explain to the lords whether it was just his clumsiness that had driven him off the track, or whether the real Beelzebub had bumped into him in the middle of the last chicane. So it works!
