quoted. the Media Podcast: Press Freedom in Turkey – Media

After the earthquake, before the elections: A new episode of “quoted. der medienpodcast” is about how freely the media in Turkey can report. Guest: Spiegel journalist Özlem Topçu.

The devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria claimed the lives of more than 50,000 people, seriously injured countless others and left them homeless. We read a lot about it in the local media and heard that the extent of the catastrophe also has political reasons, for example because there was too little control over the construction of buildings. But what about reporting on these issues in Turkey? How freely can newspapers, television and radio report there?

Communication scientist Nadia Zaboura and SZ author Nils Minkmar discuss this in the current episode of “quoted. der medienpodcast”. Guest: Özlem Topçu, deputy head of the foreign department at the news magazine The mirror. A look at the Turkish media landscape after the quake and ahead of the elections that were scheduled to take place in May this year. And on how people with a Turkish immigration history in Germany receive these media.

“quoted. the media podcast” is a cooperation between the CIVIS Media Foundation for Integration and Cultural Diversity in Europe and the Süddeutsche Zeitungfunded by the Mercator Foundation.
