Quoted, media podcast – Qatar World Cup: Between criticism and clichés – media

Why is this World Cup polarizing so much? Is it right to deny Qatar the right to host a World Cup? Or is the outrage hypocritical? A new episode of “quoted. der medienpodcast” deals with these questions.

The German team is out, but the ball keeps rolling and we take a preliminary look at the coverage of this World Cup and the country hosting it. “World Cup of shame”, “tournament of hypocrites”, calls for a boycott: the outrage over the football World Cup in Qatar was and is great. And indeed there are many reasons to criticize the host country, whether it be exploitation of migrant workers or homophobia. The media were also full of this balancing act between football enthusiasm and reference to human rights violations.

But now there is also a criticism of the criticism. Why is this World Cup polarizing so much? Is it right to deny Qatar the right to host a World Cup? Or is the outrage hypocritical, does it reflect double standards? Is it arrogant and Eurocentric, even Islamophobic? In Russia, for example, after the annexation of Crimea and the bombing of Aleppo, the ball rolled with almost no criticism from the media.

That’s what the current episode of “quoted. der medienpodcast” is all about, in which Dunja Ramadan is a guest, from the SZ’s politics department and responsible for the Arab world.

“quoted. the media podcast” is a cooperation between the CIVIS Media Foundation for Integration and Cultural Diversity in Europe and the Süddeutsche Zeitungfunded by the Mercator Foundation.
