Quoted, Media Podcast – How Iranian protests are covered – Media

A new episode of “quoted. der medienpodcast” deals with how the German media portrays the protests in Iran and how it is received by the Iranian community in Germany. Guest: WDR journalist Isabel Schayani.

The protests in Iran have been going on for almost two months now. Citizens from all walks of life are taking to the streets across the country to demand an end to the mullahs’ regime, despite brutal reactions from the so-called security forces, despite the risk of imprisonment, torture and even death. How does the German media reflect these events? How is that received by the Iranian community in Germany? And how do refugees from other countries perceive the reporting? A guest in the current episode of “quoted. der medienpodcast” is Isabel Schayani, head of WDRforyou, an online service by West German Broadcasting for refugees in German, Farsi, Arabic and Ukrainian.

The journalist talks about the difficulties in reporting on Iran, the most important sources of information for the Iranian community in Germany and how these people view the media in Germany. Regarding the accusation that there are “Mullah-understanders” in the German media, Schayani says in the current episode that it is a shame for the topic to be thought about in camps instead of discussing how the citizens of Iran are treated by their government.

“quoted. the media podcast” is a cooperation between the CIVIS Media Foundation for Integration and Cultural Diversity in Europe and the Süddeutsche Zeitung, funded by the Mercator Foundation.
