There was no end to the clapping after Mathias Döpfner gave his last speech as President of the BDZV Publishers’ Association. He was allowed to speak about freedom and freedom of the press, this year’s motto for the publishers’ congress in Berlin. The Springer managing director enjoys the applause. He sits down. And gets up again when the hall, filled with the owners and managers of smaller and larger newspapers, does not stop clapping. Döpfner indicates a bow in the direction of the audience, who at this moment is celebrating a man who has long since made negative headlines on the other side of the Atlantic.
