Publication in 2024: Merkel writes political memoirs

Status: 08.09.2022 5:19 p.m

About nine months ago she was dismissed from office with a big tattoo and pop music. Now Chancellor Merkel wants to write her memoirs. It should also be about key political decisions.

It should be an “exclusive insight” into her political life and work: After Angela Merkel was Chancellor for 16 years, she now wants to present her personal story in a book. She will be supported in this by her longstanding office manager and political adviser Beate Baumann.

In her memoirs, Merkel wants to reflect on political decisions and events and make them “understandable to the general public,” according to publisher Kiepenheuer & Witsch.

During her years in office, Merkel led Germany through dramatic crises and shaped German and international politics and society in a unique way with her actions and attitude, said Kerstin Gleba, publisher of Kiepenheuer & Witsch. It promises an “important document of contemporary international history.”

Planned worldwide release

The publisher says it has secured worldwide rights to the former chancellor’s political memoirs. They are to be released simultaneously in Germany, the USA, Canada, Great Britain and other countries in autumn 2024.

Merkel left office in December 2021 after 16 years as Chancellor.
