Public service: tariff deal averts new strikes – politics

For German citizens, further massive strikes in the public sector have been averted. Employers and unions agreed at the weekend to significantly increase the incomes of 2.5 million administrative staff, educators and garbage workers. They are to receive an inflation bonus totaling 3,000 euros in several stages this year. Next year there will be a permanent salary increase of 200 euros plus at least 5.5 percent, which will be increased for low-income earners. Calculated over the term of the collective agreement of two years, this means an average of two increases of six percent. The basis for the agreement was a proposal by independent arbitrators, because the social partners had been at loggerheads for weeks beforehand and could not find a consensus.
