For six weeks, ex-husbands Johnny Depp and Amber Heard had a mud fight in a US court. There were serious allegations in the defamation process. Now the jury has reached a verdict.

A US jury has largely ruled in favor of actor Johnny Depp in the defamation trial against his ex-wife and colleague Amber Heard. Heard had accused Depp of abuse and domestic violence – the seven jurors in Fairfax, Virginia found that she defamed him. You must therefore pay $ 15 million in damages to Depp. The sum is significantly less than the $ 50 million for which Depp had sued.

At the same time, according to the verdict, Depp also has to pay two million dollars to Heard. The jury also agreed on a number of points. Heard counterclaimed Depp’s lawsuit, demanding $100 million.

Dressed all in black, Heard followed the verdict in court, Depp did not show up. Numerous onlookers and fans, especially Depp, had gathered in front of the court, who cheered after the verdict and shouted “Johnny, Johnny”. Sentencing was delayed because the jury failed to enter what it deemed appropriate damages on the appropriate form.

Week-long negotiations – broadcast live

For six weeks, the ex-husbands had made serious allegations against each other in the process – which were broadcast all over the world via cameras via live stream. Heard said Depp physically and sexually assaulted her multiple times. Depp denies ever being violent towards Heard. Rather, she was the aggressive in their relationship. Both accused each other of destroying each other’s careers. In their closing arguments, the lawyers on both sides then again brought forward serious allegations of sexual abuse, physical violence, lies and drug excesses.

Former Pirates of the Caribbean star Depp also accused Heard of making false statements in a 2018 op-ed by the Washington Post about domestic violence. This damaged his reputation, which is why he demanded the $ 50 million. The bitter controversy has been raging for years. Heard filed for divorce in 2016 after just 15 months of marriage.

Previous lawsuit against newspaper failed

About two years ago, Depp suffered a defeat in London with a lawsuit against the tabloid “Sun”. It was about an article alleging that Depp physically abused Heard as a wife beater. After a trial with fierce allegations, the High Court ultimately dismissed the lawsuit.
